Fernando Alonso will be eager to win the
Spanish Grand Prix for the third time and boost his Formula One world championship ambitions.
Most recent race
The Spanish legend finished second at the Monaco Grand Prix on May 28, missing out on an ever-elusive 33rd victory in the sport.
Alonso started the race in P2 after narrowly missing out on the pole position to race-winner Max Verstappen of Red Bull Racing-Honda RBPT.
Formula One title ambitions
The two-time Formula One world champion is placed third on the World Drivers' Championship standings having accumulated 93 points from six races.
Alonso is 12 points and 51 points behind second-placed Sergio Perez of Red Bull Racing-Honda RBPT and leader, Verstappen respectively.
Why Alonso could win the 2023 Spanish GP
The 41-year-old will be returning to the Circuit de Catalunya where he won the Spanish Grand Prix twice - clinching the title in 2006 and 2013.
Alonso has secured a podium finish in five out of the six races in the current Formula One World Championship season.
The experienced racing driver will be determined to win the Spanish Grand Prix in order to move into second place in the standings.
What did he say?
"That was difficult. We opted to start on the hard tyre and hoped to play a bit of the long game, in strategy, but Max drove so well, super-well, on those medium tyres to extend his first stint that we didn't have a chance," Alonso said after the 2023 Monaco Grand Prix.
"And then, in the end, the rain came and made it complicated. "Our forecast said it was only going to be light rain so I felt it was best to stay on the slick tyres and not go to the intermediates. It was not easy to drive out there.
"I could not use full power around the lap, braking was extremely fragile and it wasn't easy. "I was surprised that there were no safety cars and no incidents so I think everyone did an amazing job."
